My depression - an update

Posted at 03:02 PM on August 06, 2009

I wanted to post an update on my mental state of mind since creating this website and the forum www.charcotmarietooth.freeforums.org .

I have found running this website and forum has helped so much in getting me to a "better place", of course I still have many low moments but being able to help others in the same position as me and in many cases being able to continue those friendships on the forum, being able to compare notes and engage in friendly day to day chat with like minded people mean I am able to honstly say that I feel better equiped to deal with day to day living and better equiped to be able to approach medical professionals and get what I need to live my life the best I can. So thanks you to all those who have helped me, whether through a small meaningful comment left for me or through the ongoing friendship I have found with many of you.

I don't want to completely remove the sections on the My CMT page as most of it still applies on those low days and I know many of you have been able to relate to this feeling. To those people, I want you know that there IS a way forward and there ARE many people who feel like you do. Finding them is the hard part, and I hope I can help with that.

I get a little depressed too. I'd like to do things that normal people do. Social and sports, etc. But it's way too embarassing and hazardous. Oh well, I guess I just don't mind being depressed, I just kind of wallow in it.

Someone else at my apartment, my neighbor has CMT too, so we kind of limp around. He's old and uses a walker, but not always. Oh boy, I can hardly wait...

Have you tried different shoes? I see you wearing clogs. I've given up on fashionable shoes, and just wear goofy high tops. But the foot pain went away, so that was nice, even if I always am dressed down too much.

Hi Layne,

Thanks for leaving a comment. Sorry to hear your CMT gets you down too.

I have extra wide and extra deep shoes from Cosyfeet which are supportive and a good fit and I wear those all the time when possible. However, I can't get both my foot and an AFO into ANY shoes which is where I use the Crocs (clogs). I have a pair of shoes being custom made at the hospital at the moment and should be collecting them in just over a week.

I can't wear anything even remotely fashionable either ;)

To Layne and Sam,
I am off work att the moment due to CMT (Type1) related issues...,
chanced upon this website and have added as favourite.
I'm guessing you are both relatively young females.
I was diagnosed with CMT when I was 30 and now at 52 have lots I can add...possibly do so over next few weeks.
I certainly can relate to the non fashionable shoes and a million other things!!!!' Stick with me and all will be revealed...just wanted to make contact first.
Well done Sam on commencing this website...
